Hello! You've made it to Audrey's journal. I'm just a girl who loves Lord of the Rings, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Doctor Who, Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series, reading in general, writing, and music. I talk about a lot of real life stuff over here, too.

I'm not very strict on my friending policy. If we've talked on a comm and you want to add me, just let me know, and I'll be sure to add you back.

...with writing prompts.

Lyrics, quotations, strange ideas, something random that happened in a dream, Tumblr pics.

I want to write, but I'm not sure what I feel like writing right now.

I actually want to get something short written and polished in the next few weeks. We're having a talent night at church in a few weeks. I always sing. But I sing every Sunday; it's not something that no one has heard before. So I'm thinking I might like to share a short story or chapter. I'm actually a bit freaked out at the prospect; I feel like that's baring my soul way more than praying in front of people, somehow. But it could be really neat.

So if you've got something, please share it!

Total books read: 51
I challenged myself on Goodreads to read 50 books this year. I actually made it to 51 (thought it was 50, but I'd left one off my Goodreads shelves and so read one more than I meant too--and I really tried hard for that last one, not knowing I didn't even have to!)

Best New Reads
Titus Alone by Meryn Peake -- not the best of the Gormenghast books, but Peake, even at this stage of his life, was unparalleled in imagination.
Mirror Dance - Lois McMaster Bujold
Memory - Lois McMaster Bujold -- I love Miles. I love Miles. And I've loved reading more about him, his family, his exploits, and all the adrenaline highs in the Vorkosigan Saga!
The Penderwicks - Jeanne Birdsall -- What a delightful surprise this book was. Picked it up randomly at the bookstore and promptly fell in love with these girls (and Hound, of course).
The Blue Sword - Robin McKinley -- A young adult fantasy classic I missed until this year.
The Changeling Sea - Patricia McKillip -- I would kill for McKillip's imagery in this book. So beautiful and painful (not in a bad way).

Favorite New Views
Mirror Mirror - A fun, gorgeous romp through this fairytale, and a bit unconventional with a few elements, which I really liked. Directed by Tarsem, so you know it's visually stunning. Would definitely watch again.
Beasts of the Southern Wild - I believe I said most of what I could about this movie in this post. If anything, I'll just press my recommendation again. A beautiful, inspiring film.

Hey, guys. Just a post to say I'm about to make a friends cut. It's been a while since I weeded out people I haven't talked to in forever or just never really connected much with.

To those of you who are cut, I wish you well and it's been nice while it lasted. This is starting to feel like I'm breaking up with someone over Facebook, so I'll stop. Seriously, though, thanks for being a friend.

Title: A Debt of Honor
Wordcount: 216
Characters: Zuko, Lin Beifong
Rating: G/K
Warnings/Disclaimer: Spoilers for LoK 1x08 "When Extremes Meet." Also, the characters, etc. all belong to Nickelodeon and Bryke and not me.
Summary: An unexpected message from an old family friend offers Fire Lord Zuko a chance to revisit the past and pay off an old debt.
Notes: Just a little flash fic inspired by a comment in the ontd_lok ep discussion post. I would love to see this happen in canon. I'd watch a whole spin-off about it.

I’ll send a rendezvous point by hawk in a day or two. Come with me, and I’ll consider your debt cancelled.Collapse )

Sorry for the lack of posts that aren't fanfic lately. I just got an itch for a while there. No new Korra ep today means the itch is gone for the moment. :)

I have a little bit of job news. I'm getting a sort of promotion, kind of? I don't really know what to call it. Right now, I'm a clerical aide for one division Public Safety. It's a temporary job, and I'm not eligible for benefits like insurance, retirement, and paid leave. I've never had any of those things from a job, plus I still live at home, so that was fine. Well, this week, I was offered a clerk position (a step up) with a different division, and I decided to take it. The downside? My work will be less varied. I'm going from sorting mail, sending letters, creating folders, and some document scanning to just document scanning. And, even though clerk is usually a permanent position, this particular unit works off of grants, so it's just temporary. But it will be a month and a half more of work at this temp position than the other, and I will be making a little more even if I don't take home much more in my paycheck. I could have insurance if I want it (but I don't think I do because I don't even know what sort of mess it could be to get back on Dad's insurance when this four months is up) and they'll be setting some aside for ~retirement. And I can accrue leave time.

Basically, I took it because it's an opportunity to get myself out there and connected to more people. I don't know that this is the career I want, but right now, I'm good with it. Someone in personnel, who've I've only had a real conversation with maybe twice, recommended me for the new position. I'm pleased with that.

I am going to miss my current office. Most of the other temps hardly ever say anything, but sometimes we'd talk and laugh a bit. It was nice. I think it suited me well. I hope there's a good dynamic at my new office.

In the new office, they have a sign hanging up on a coatrack that says "Insane Asylum," so they must at least have a sense of humor, right? That's a good sign. It is darker in there. :/ Dim flourescent lighting. Yay. There's flourescent lighting in the office I'm in now, but we also have this huge floor to ceiling window, so we get natural light. I'll miss that.

If I hate the new one, it is just temporary. But I would have more on my resume and have gotten myself out there more, so I'm thinking that on the whole, this will be a good thing that I've decided to do.

So what else can I say? _missmargaret_ and I were reading The Two Towers together, and I raced ahead and finished it yesterday. She had one moment where she was a few pages ahead of me, and I just couldn't let it be. THAT REMINDS ME! Margaret and Mom found me the most awesome (drinking) glasses ever. Let me use ~the power of the internet~ to find pictures for you.

Ok, so it's not that great of a pic, but I don't think if I took one it would look any better/you'd be able to see the glass better. But yeah. Margaret and Mom found two of these at a thrift store yesterday. Mom thought of how I always try to commemmorate Bilbo and Frodo's birthday and Tolkien's birthday, so these will be great for making toasts. I wish I was kidding. No. No I don't. I live for this stuff.

I have a Strider and a Frodo "goblet". No box, but I ain't bovvered. I will keep these glasses precious as rings. Maybe I'll keep them secret, keep them safe with my boxed LOTR PEZ dispenser set. (I kind of want to own two of those PEZ sets so I can open and use one and keep the other nice. Yes, these are the debates I have in my head).

What I was going to say before going into the goblet tangent is that I raced ahead, like the three hunters chasing the Orcs tirelessly across the plains of Rohan, you might say, and finished the book yesterday. It was so awesome. It always is. I've lost count of how many times I've been through LOTR.

Now I'm reading Wildwood by Colin Meloy. Yes, Colin Meloy, lead singer of The Decemberists. The last book I read by an awesome songwriter was a disappointment (Ssrry, Josh Ritter; I'll always love your songs; a lot; you're amazing), so I'm hoping this one won't be.

In other news, baby sister is moving out again. This will be the third apartment in twelve months. Yeah. Hope this one works out better.

And I think that's enough for now. Talk to you lovelies later!

I cannot get Lin/Tenzin out of my head, you guys!

Title: New Love Between Old Friends
Wordcount: 1,062
Characters/Pairing: Tenzin, Lin Bei Fong, young Tenzin/Lin

Warnings/Disclaimer: I guess you could say spoilers for LoK 1x06 "And the Winner Is," but this fic could mostly be seen as headcanon spec fic. Also, the characters, etc. all belong to Nickelodeon and Bryke and not me.
Summary: Closing in on 30, the Avatar's son and the Chief of Police's daughter finally get together.

Legend of Korra fic, my loves.

Title: The Same Feelings at Opposite Times
Wordcount: 930
Characters: Tenzin, Lin Bei Fong
Rating: PG-13-ish for one reference to sex
Warnings/Disclaimer: Spoilers for LoK 1x06 "And the Winner Is." Also, the characters, etc. all belong to Nickelodeon and Bryke and not me. Title comes from Feist's "The Bad in Each Other."
Summary: [Spoiler (click to open)]After receiving a shocking confession from a young acolyte, Tenzin visits Chief Bei Fong, his lover, at her office to deliver it to her.[omg, why do I fail at summaries?]
Notes: Headcanon: Even when he's with people he's known well and for a long time, Tenzin has a hard time not being uber-formal. Also, Lin showing up [Spoiler (click to open)]at City Hall and helping change the Council's minds gave me ~ideas

His words hung still in the space between them for a few minutes, then Lin coughed out a sharp laugh. She didn’t see Tenzin wince.Collapse )
